Child Abuse and Neglect

The Louisiana Children’s Code defines abuse as the infliction or attempted infliction of physical or mental injury upon the child by a parent or any other person. The exploitation or overwork of a child by a parent or any other person; and the involvement of a child in any sexual act with a parent or any other person. Neglect is defined as the refusal or unreasonable failure of a parent or caretaker to supply the child with necessary food, clothing, shelter, care, treatment or counseling from any illness. Factors attributing to abuse and neglect are substance abuse, mental illness, mental retardation, poverty, and social isolation. Families do have several options available to them to receive help if they are in danger of committing abuse or neglect. In the Alexandria area, there is the Office of Community Services, the Shepards Center, Volunteers of America, and Cenla Community Action Centers. What resources are available to families in your communities?

  1. As a citizen of my community, I notice when a family is struggling or when I witness signs of neglect. I have personally worked with a local organization to
provide resources to families struggling. The organization has provided groceries to families, transportation, and has mentored several youth in the community who may not have a positive role model. The community has to come together and provide help and services to families.

  2. I don't think any child should have to go through abuse whether they are in Louisiana or anywhere in the world.
